Sonographer or Consultant?
At the London Ultrasound Centre you have a choice as to who will perform your private pregnancy or gynaecology scan.
Choose to see one of our highly experienced Fetal Medicine Foundation accredited sonographers, or one of our Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologists who are trained fetal medicine specialists, such as Mr Wimalasundera and Dr Marianne Vendola.
During weekdays you may choose to see either our sonographer or consultant obstetrician/gynaecologist.
On weekends there is a rotation of staff so you may not be able to choose a particular staff member to perform your scan, however the weekend staff are of the same high level of experience and qualification as those that work weekdays and all have been chosen by our Medical Director Mr Ruwan Wimalasundera.
All our sonographers are radiographers that have been trained in human anatomy, physiology, and pathology applied to obstetric and gynaecological ultrasound imaging.
They are highly trained clinical technicians (but are not doctors) and all have passed post graduate medical exams in the field of women's ultrasound.
In addition all sonographers (and consultants) employed at the clinic are accredited by the Fetal Medicine Foundation (FMF). Their work is audited annually by the FMF via precise measurements recorded on our Viewpoint Fetal Database, and they must submit images of the scans they have performed. Failure to pass a recognised quality threshold will result in non-renewal of their licence and they would not be permitted to practice in our clinic.
Booking with a sonographer does not mean you will receive a lower quality service than with a consultant. In fact our expert sonographers are trusted by some of the busiest private consultant obstetricians and gynaecologists in Britain.
We have more available scanning time with our highly qualified sonographers so in an emergency it is sometimes possible to reserve an appointment for the next or even the same day.
All our consultants who perform scans are obstetricians and gynaecologists who are trained and have studied in the specialist area of Fetal Medicine.
Dr Ruwan Wimalasundera has private obstetric practices delivering babies but he is also an expert in this highly specialised field.
Just like the sonographers they are also accredited by the Fetal Medicine Foundation (FMF), and their work is audited annually by the FMF via precise measurements digitally recorded on our Viewpoint Fetal Database. Each year they must submit images of the scans they have performed for assessment by the FMF. Failure to pass a recognised quality threshold will result in non-renewal of their licence and they would not be permitted to practice in our clinic.
Fees to see one of our consultant fetal medicine specialists are around 15% more than the same appointment performed by a sonographer to cover the higher staff costs associated with qualified consultants.
Appointment times for consultants are limited and very popular so please ensure that you book in advance to avoid disappointment. Our fetal medicine specialists are in high demand so the earlier you call us the more chance you have of reserving an available appointment.
