I am bleeding heavily/experiencing intense pain, should I come to you for a Gynaecological Pelvic Scan?
Yes. We are used to dealing with emergency gynaecological situations. Please let us know if you are bleeding when making the appointment so that we can make the neccesary preparations.

However if you are in extreme pain or losing a great deal of blood we strongly reccommend you attend your nearest NHS A&E instead.

What conditions can be diagnosed by a Gynaecological Pelvic Scan?
There are many women's gynaecological conditions in which ultrasound may be helpful and the staff at the London Ultrasound Centre are experts in performing these types of scans.

How is a Gynaecological Scan performed?
Gynaecological Scans are usually performed internally using a long, narrow, sterile probe that is inserted about 50mm into the vagina. This method is known as trans-vaginal scanning.

Sometimes the sonographer will also perform an initial examination via your tummy, in which case this is known as trans-abdominal scanning.

Top Book

Must I have an internal Gynaecological Scan?
No. However the clearest images are obtained via an internal scan and the operator will almost certainly want to perfom the examination in this way so as to provide you with the best, most accurate assessment.

If you are unwilling to have your gynaecological scan performed internally you will need to drink at least 1 litre of water and wait 1 hour before the scan can be performed trans-abdominally.

Your examination may be less accurate and reliable if it is not performed internally

What will I see at my Gynaecological Scan?
A Gynaecological Scan is performed with conventional 2D ultrasound so the images you will see may not be immediately recognisable.

Rest assured that our team at The London Ultrasound Centre are all expert gynaecological scanners and are trained to recognise the organs of the female reproductive system.

We don't usually supply images from your Gynaecological Scan to your specialist as they generally want to read and understand the results of your examination on a medical report.

Top Book

Is a Gynaecological Pelvic Scan performed in 3D/4D?
No. There is currently no advantage nor greater accuracy in using 3D or 4D ultrasound during a Gynaecological Pelvic Scan.

Top Book

Must I see my GP or Gynaecologist before having a Gynaecological Pelvic Scan?
Usually yes. However many patients come to us first for a Gynaecological Scan and then go on to see their GP or Gynaecologist with our clinical report.

Top Book

Do I need a referral to have a Gynaecological Scan at your clinic?
No. You do not need a referral from your GP or Gynaecologist to attend our clinic.

Patients have told us they find it quicker and simpler to have a Gynaecological Pelvic Scan at our clinic and then see their GP or Gynaecologist for a follow up consultation should the result of the scan require medical attention.

Our patients also say that coming to see us first was useful to rule out any gynaecological complaints before seeing their GP.

We will provide a detailed medical report addressed to your GP or Gynaecologist.

Top Book

When will I receive the results of my Gynaecological Scan?
The results from your Gynaecological Scan will be available immediately after your appointment.

All data and images from the ultrasound scanner are instantly and digitally transferred to our reporting database. A comprehensive medical report will be prepared with a copy addressed to your GP or Gynaecologist and one to yourself.

Top Book

Will I get a picture from my Gynaecological Pelvic Scan?
No. Not unless it is specifically requested.

The reason is that GPs or Gynaecologists aren't interested in examining pictures from your gynaecological scan, they simply want to know our interpretation of what we have looked at and what we may have found.

However we are happy to supply a complimentary glossy thermal print from your gynaecological scan, please ask the operator during your appointment. The remaining images can be purchased if required.

Top Book

What are the risks of having a Gynaecological Pelvic Scan?
There are no known risks in having a Gynaecological Pelvic Scan.

Ultrasound has been safely used to assist in the diagnosis of women's gynaecological conditions for over 30 years.

Top Book

Do I need a full bladder for a Gynaecological Pelvic Scan?
It is useful to arrive with a slightly full baldder so that the operator may perform a mapping scan via your tummy.

You will then be asked to empty your bladder so that an internal scan can be performed.

Top Book

Is there anything else I should know about the Gynaecological Pelvic Scan?
While we are able to provide you with an accurate and reliable Gynaecological Pelvic Scan our clincal staff cannot prescribe medication or recommend surgery from what they have reported.

If anything unsual has been found by the operator they will tell you immediately. You should then take our report to your GP or Gynaecologist for ongoing medical care.
