Do I need to see a Consultant or a Sonographer for my pregnancy?

Many patients ask this question - the answer depends on your pregnancy and how you are feeling about it.

If you are having a very uncomplicated, routine single pregnancy and are quite relaxed about the progress then one of our Advanced Ultrasound Practitioners (Sonographers) are often the most logical choice.

Our Sonographers are all radiographers trained in human anatomy, physiology, and pathology applied to obstetric and gynecological ultrasound imaging. They are not medical doctors but have all passed post graduate exams in the field of women's ultrasound.

All our Sonographers are highly experienced medical professionals and are accredited and annually audited by the Fetal Medicine Foundation.

However if your pregnancy is beset with complications, you are anxious about certain aspects, have lots of medical questions, or you are having a difficult multiple birth, perhaps you might feel more comfortable seeing a Consultant?

Our Consultants are all Fetal Medicine Specialists and they are very popular so book early to avoid disappointment, otherwise you may find more suitable availability with a sonographer.

Should you wish to see one of our Consultants charges will be higher to cover specialist fees.

Having a private scan with a consultant means you will receive an expert scan, diagnosis and consultation for the scan type that you have booked.

If you require more in depth consultation and analysis of your pregnancy you will need to book an additional Fetal Medical Consultation.

Please be aware that should your private scan appointment with a consultant become protracted by a consultation outside of the booked scan you will be charged for additional consultation time. 

Whether you decide to see a Consultant or one of our Sonographers you will still receive the best of care in diagnostic pregnancy or gynecology scans.
In a situation where one of our sonographers is concerned by what they see your case will always be referred up to one of our consultant doctors.
