Who Will Perform My Scan?
At The London Ultrasound Centre you have a choice as to who will perform your private pregnancy or gynaecology scan.
Choose to see one of our highly experienced Fetal Medicine Foundation accredited Sonographers, or one of our Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologists who are also Fetal Medicine Specialists, such as Dr Maxwell and Dr Kyle.
Why have a Private Scan?
Many people believe it is only rich and famous women who have private scans during pregnancy or for gynecology. While it is true that we do have the occasional VIP the majority of our patients are ordinary women who have many different reasons for using our private medical scan services.
You do not need a referral from your GP, Obstetrician or Midwife to book an appointment at our clinic.
Having private scans does not mean you cannot have your baby on the NHS. We will happily communicate with your NHS obstetrician or midwife to ensure you receive the very best in antenatal care.
Booking a private scan - either obstetric or gynecological - at The
London Ultrasound Centre ensures that you will receive the best
ultrasound examination to assist with your overall care.
Reasons for a Private Pregnancy or Gynaecological Scan
- The Combined Nuchal Scan - We perform the Combined Test that includes a blood test to calculate your Down Syndrome risk. This more accurate screening is only available in 30% of NHS hospitals.
- Missed Nuchal Scan - If you are later than 13 weeks and 6
days pregnant you have missed your Down Syndrome Screening in which case you
may come to us for a Quadruple Test.
- The Integrated Test for Down Syndrome - Maybe you are seeking the most accurate Down Syndrome screening offered by the Integrated Test?
- Dissatisfaction with the NHS - Perhaps you were unhappy with your NHS scan and would like to be re-scanned? Are you unable to secure an additional NHS appointment?
- Second Opinion - Has you baby been diagnosed with a problem either privately or on the NHS and you are seeking an expert second opinion?
- Scan Availability - You may have been offered a scan with the NHS at a time that is not convenient and are finding it difficult to reschedule.
- Concerned About Baby's Growth - On the NHS an expectant mother is only offered 2 scans during any routine pregnancy – the 12 week Nuchal Scan and a 20 week Anomaly Scan
– whereas in the private sector the mother is scanned more frequently to monitor growth in the womb.
There is no harm caused by the extra scans and we can track your baby's progress by performing
a Fetal Welfare Scan every few weeks.
- Pregnancy Anxiety - You may have experienced miscarriage in the past. Perhaps this is your first pregnancy? Maybe you have reason to be worried about your pregnancy?
- Unsure of Dates - You may not know the date of your last cycle and need to calculate your dates so as to plan your pregnancy. This is often called a Dating Scan , Viability Scan or Early Pregnancy Scan . This type of scan is not normally offered on the NHS.
- Family Genetic Disorders - If you have family history of genetic abnormalities we can perform pre-birth testing on your unborn baby. Our specialists in CVS (Chorion Villus Sampling) and Amniocentesis are experts in sampling, analysis and pre-natal genetic testing.
- Gender Identification - Your local NHS trust may have a policy of not revealing you baby's gender to expectant parents. We can reveal your baby's sex from 14 weeks onwards.
- Pregnancy Pain - Perhaps you have experienced some unusual tummy pain?
- Premature Labour - Maybe you are concerned about premature labour. You may have a family history of premature births.
- Reduced Baby Movement - You may have noticed your baby isn’t moving about as much as usual or has stopped moving in the womb altogether.
- Pregnancy Travel - You may be travelling soon and want to know if it is safe to travel at your stage of your pregnancy.
- Bleeding in Pregnancy - You may be experiencing unusual bleeding.
- Trying to conceive - Maybe you are trying to start a family and want to know when you are ovulating?
- Pelvic Pain - Perhaps you are experiencing pain in the pelvis or lower back?
- Ovarian Cancer Screening - Some women with a family history of ovarian cancer come to us for regular screening.
